What is the maximum number of URLs in an XML sitemap?
A single XML sitemap can contain a maximum of 50,000 URLs and cannot exceed 50 megabytes uncompressed. If your website has more than 50,000 URLs, you must split them into multiple sitemaps and bundle them in a Sitemap Index file.
Why should every URL in a sitemap use HTTPS?
Sitemaps should only present canonical, 200 OK indexable URLs. Including HTTP URLs causes redirect hops, wastes crawl budget, and can lead Google to flag mixed-content protocol inconsistencies.
Does having more URLs in a sitemap guarantee more indexation?
No. Sitemaps act as crawl discovery hints, not indexing guarantees. Google inspects content quality, site authority, and internal linking to determine whether each URL deserves inclusion in the search index.
Are <changefreq> and <priority> still used by Google?
Google has officially stated that Googlebot largely ignores `<priority>` and `<changefreq>`. However, Google heavily relies on accurate `<lastmod>` date headers to determine when content was refreshed and needs re-crawling.
