Google Review Snippet & Self-Serving Policy Guidelines

Google enforces strict guidelines regarding review snippets, including prohibiting 'self-serving' reviews for LocalBusiness and Organization schemas on their own websites.

  • ItemReviewed Types: Must reference a specific item such as Product, Book, Movie, Course, SoftwareApplication, or Recipe
  • Rating Scale: reviewRating must define ratingValue (e.g. 4.5), bestRating (usually 5), and worstRating (usually 1)
  • Author Attribution: Google requires genuine human author attribution (Person) for individual reviews, not anonymous bot text
  • Self-Serving Review Policy: Direct 1st-party reviews on your own LocalBusiness or Organization cannot trigger star snippets on your own domain

Frequently asked questions

Can I use review schema on my homepage to show stars for my own business?

No. In 2019, Google introduced the self-serving review policy, which invalidates rich star snippets for LocalBusiness and Organization markup placed on that business's own website. Reviews must be for specific 3rd-party items or products.

What is the difference between Review and AggregateRating?

A Review schema represents a single review written by one person or organization. AggregateRating represents the mathematical average score derived from multiple ratings or reviews.

Can I use a 10-point or 100-point rating scale?

Yes. Set `bestRating: 10` or `bestRating: 100` alongside your `ratingValue`. Google will automatically normalize the score to display standard 5-star graphical representations in SERPs.

Are pros and cons supported in Review schema?

Yes! Google recently added support for positiveNotes (pros) and negativeNotes (cons) arrays in Product Review schema to show structured pros/cons in search snippets.
