XML Sitemap Protocol & Validation Logic
Sitemaps must adhere to the XML 1.0 schema specification defined by sitemaps.org (Namespace: http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9).
URL Limit: Maximum 50,000 URLs per individual sitemap file (use sitemap index if greater).File Size Limit: Maximum 50MB uncompressed file size.Date Formatting: `lastmod` must be formatted in ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD or YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssTZD).Entity Encoding: URLs must escape reserved characters (& as &, ' as ', < as <, etc.).Canonical URLs Only: URLs in sitemaps must return HTTP 200 OK and match canonical tags.

What is the maximum number of URLs allowed in an XML sitemap?
A single XML sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and cannot exceed 50MB uncompressed. If your website has more than 50,000 URLs, you must split them into multiple sitemaps and reference them in a master sitemap index file.
Does Google require the changefreq and priority tags in sitemaps?
No. Google's webmaster guidelines have explicitly stated that Googlebot largely ignores `changefreq` and `priority` tags. The most critical tags are `<loc>` and an accurate `<lastmod>` date.
Why should noindexed or redirected pages be excluded from sitemaps?
XML sitemaps should represent a clean directory of your highest-priority, canonical, 200 OK indexable pages. Including 301 redirects, 404s, or noindex URLs wastes crawl budget and sends conflicting signals to search engines.
What date format is accepted in sitemap lastmod tags?
The `lastmod` element must use W3C Datetime format (ISO 8601), such as `YYYY-MM-DD` (e.g. 2026-03-18) or with time `YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss+00:00`.
