How to use this tool

1. Paste URL List or XML

Paste your raw list of page URLs (one per line) or existing large XML markup.

2. Set Chunk Partition Size

Choose chunk limit (e.g. 1,000 URLs for faster Googlebot fetching, or the 50,000 maximum).

3. Configure Sitemap Index

Set base domain URL for chunk naming (e.g. `https://yoursite.com/sitemap-1.xml`).

4. Download or Copy Files

Copy the generated `sitemap_index.xml` and individual chunked sitemaps ready to serve.

Sitemap Index & Partition Architecture

A sitemap index file uses the `<sitemapindex>` root element containing multiple `<sitemap>` entries with `<loc>` and optional `<lastmod>` timestamps.

  • Total Sitemaps: ceil(Total URLs / Chunk Size)
  • Maximum Sitemaps in Index: Up to 50,000 child sitemaps can be listed in a single sitemap index.
  • Index Namespace: `http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9` with `<sitemapindex>` root.
  • Child Filename Pattern: Standard convention uses `sitemap-1.xml`, `sitemap-2.xml`, or category-specific names (`sitemap-posts.xml`, `sitemap-products.xml`).

When should I split my sitemap?

You must split your sitemap whenever it exceeds 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed. Additionally, splitting sitemaps by content type (e.g. products, blog posts, categories) is recommended for easier indexing diagnostics in Google Search Console.

Can a sitemap index contain another sitemap index?

No. The sitemap protocol does not allow nested sitemap indexes. A sitemap index can only reference XML sitemap files, not secondary sitemap indexes.

Where should the master sitemap index be submitted in Search Console?

Submit only the master sitemap index URL (e.g., `https://yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml`). Googlebot will automatically discover, crawl, and track the indexing progress of all child sitemaps referenced inside.
